JFK is mid-rebuild — 50+ airlines change terminals in 2026

The new Terminal 6 has opened its first gates, Terminal 7 is winding down, and the New Terminal One opens late 2026 at the earliest. A terminal printed on a ticket booked months ago may no longer be right — confirm in your airline's app within 24 hours of departure.

Overview

How JFK is laid out

JFK is in the middle of a roughly $19 billion rebuild, and that changes how you should read any map of it — including this one. Five terminals are fully active (1, 4, 5, 8 and the new Terminal 6), Terminal 7 is winding down, and the New Terminal One opens its first gates in late 2026. More than fifty airlines change terminals during the rebuild, so confirm yours in your airline’s app within 24 hours of departure.

The terminals sit around a central loop served by the free AirTrain, which runs 24/7 and connects every terminal plus the Jamaica and Howard Beach stations for the subway and LIRR.

The terminals, one by one

Terminal 1 — international carriers

The old Terminal 1 hosts a rotating set of international carriers on the airport’s south side. Its future is short: most of its airlines relocate to the New Terminal One after that facility opens, and the old building sits on the footprint of the wider NTO project. Until then it operates normally.

Terminal 4 — Delta and SkyTeam

Delta’s JFK hub and one of the airport’s two largest terminals, shared with a long list of international carriers across two concourses. Delta Sky Clubs and partner lounges are here, and the terminal is not directly affected by the rebuild.

Terminal 5 — JetBlue

JetBlue’s home terminal on the north side — now directly connected to the new Terminal 6, which JetBlue also uses. If you are flying JetBlue, check which of the two buildings your gate is in.

Terminal 6 — the new one

JFK’s newest building, a $4.2 billion terminal on the site of the former Terminals 6 and 7, physically connected to Terminal 5. Phase one opened in 2026 with the first six gates; completion is due in 2028 once the old Terminal 7 comes down. Airlines here include JetBlue, Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Air Canada, ANA, Cathay Pacific, Avianca, Icelandair, Condor, Norse, Frontier and Kuwait Airways, with TAP Portugal joining.

Terminal 7 — winding down

Terminal 7 is in its final stretch. Its airlines are moving to the new Terminal 6, and once the building is empty it will be demolished to make room for Terminal 6’s second phase. If a ticket booked some time ago says Terminal 7, treat it as provisional and check your airline’s app.

Terminal 8 — American and oneworld

American’s JFK hub, shared with oneworld partners including British Airways. Terminal 8 sits on the north-east side away from both construction projects, which makes it the calmest corner of the airport right now.

New Terminal One — opening late 2026

The centrepiece of the rebuild: a $9.5 billion international terminal rising on the old Terminal 1/2/3 site, which will be the largest terminal in the United States when complete around 2030. Its first phase — 14 widebody gates — is expected in November 2026 at the earliest, a date that has already slipped once. More than twenty international carriers are reported to be moving in over time, including Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Etihad. Until it opens, those airlines stay where they are.

Getting to and from JFK

The free AirTrain connects all terminals and runs around the clock. For Manhattan, take it to Jamaica Station and connect to the LIRR (about 35 minutes total to Penn Station or Grand Central) or the E train; Howard Beach connects to the A train. A yellow taxi to Manhattan is a flat fare plus tolls and surcharges, and rideshares pick up at designated zones outside each terminal.

During 2026, roadways around the construction zones are being reconfigured — allow extra time for pickups and drop-offs, particularly on the south side near the NTO works.

Parking

Garages and lots sit inside the central area with AirTrain connections to every terminal. Capacity shifts as the rebuild progresses, so pre-booking through the official JFK site is worth it during 2026.
